Sense of Place: at the Grimsby Public Art Gallery, Grimsby, On.

A Sense of Place; A juried exhibition organized by the Windsor Printmakers Forum is on display at the Grimsby Public Art Gallery until May 19, 2013.

Sense of Place is the result of an international juried call for entries initiated by the Windsor Printmaker’s Forum in 2006. Print artists were invited to consider the sense of identity inherent in their specific communities; the result is an exhibition that includes print works from across Canada and the U.S. in a broad range of both traditional and experimental media. Awareness of physical space is important in many of the works, but the exhibition goes far beyond a literal interpretation of its theme.The work investigates universal ideas and concerns, from life’s daily questions and eternal mysteries to archetypal forms and human heritage to the place of nature in the world and of human beings in nature. In the words of coordinator Patricia Coates, “the show celebrates the current momentum which flows through Canadian contemporary art”.

For the exhibition coordinators Windsor is their own special place. After searching the world for the right individuals to catalyze the creative processes into the exhibition, they recognized that “Windsor, itself, had two distinguished individuals, Alistair MacLeod and IAIN BAXTER&, who, if brought together with printmakers from across the country, could create something provocative and important.” When author Nino Ricci joined these two for a special presentation to open Sense of Place “Three creative minds gave one magical talk. The conversation played out almost like a good jazz performance. Flow and rhythm was picked up resonating through ideas of place, time, and memory.”

All three of these men are prominent in the Canadian arts and literary worlds. All three are also particularly interested in the place where visual and written creativity interacts, especially as expressed by this notion of significant place. Furthermore, this fertile intersection of the visual and literary arts made Sense of Place extremely appropriate for the featured exhibition at the GPAG during Wayzgoose, our annual book arts fair.  (Article courtesy of the Grimsby Public Art Gallery.
